7 Reasons Why I Started Wisdom & Zeal

People sometimes ask me why I started Wisdom & Zeal. Why intergenerational connections? The truth is, it wasn’t one single reason—it was a quiet build-up of stories, convictions, longings, and nudges from God over many years. Here are a few of the reasons that finally brought me to this point.

To reconnect wisdom with zeal

We live in a time filled with zeal for modernity, but the wisdom of experience is often ignored—or vice versa. Ladies, we need both. Wisdom without zeal gets stuck. Zeal without wisdom burns out. I want to honour both, and bring them back into relationship where they belong.

To rebuild connections between generations

In many families and communities today, the natural bonds between young and old have been stretched thin or broken entirely. I believe something sacred is lost when generations stop talking, listening, and learning from each other. Research has shown that there is so much to be gained mentally, physically, spiritually and socially if we can cross this intergenerational chasm. I want to help rebuild these bridges.

To debunk the idea that independence is success

I have often felt embarrassed telling people that we live with my in-laws. What if people think that we’re shiftless and can’t get ahead by ourselves? I’ve even overthought whether I’m better to say “we live with them,” “they live with us,” or “we all live together”. Of course, it is important to grow up and assume responsibility, but being responsible is not the same as being independent.

Somewhere along the way, we were sold the story that needing people is weakness. But I’ve come to believe the opposite is true: we thrive in dependence—on God, on family, on community. Wisdom and Zeal is about honouring that truth as we grow in generosity, dependability, and humility.

To combat loneliness across all generations

I see it in toddlers, teens, mothers, and grandparents: a quiet ache for connection. We weren’t made to do life alone, and I think many of us feel that more deeply than we admit. Loneliness has been declared a “global public health concern” by the WHO and it is due to a lack of meaningful relationships. My hope is that this space helps people feel a little less alone, and gives them the courage and tools to seek out their village.

Because I live an abnormally intergenerational lifestyle

Not only do we live with my in-laws, but we cherish friendships with people much older and younger than ourselves. We also homeschool our children and spend more time than most adults around children of all ages. I am passionate about the way these intergenerational connections add richness to our lives. A village has been, and is being, built around us by virtue of these connections, and I want to share the beauty of it, empowering others to do the same.

Because I’ve always wanted to write

For a long time, I’ve dreamed of writing. When we lived in Scotland, I actually intended to start a blog, but never quite figured out what I had to say. Since then, I have often revisited the idea, but felt every time that God was saying “not yet,” until late last year.

I’m writing this blog not just for the sake of words, but because I believe stories can shape culture and offer comfort, challenge, and vision.

Because God gave me the idea, and released me to do it now

This wasn’t my timing. For years, I held the dream loosely. But late last year, as I brought it to the Lord again, His “wait” had turned into release, and the idea for Wisdom and Zeal arrived with it. As I continued to explore the idea, research methods and consider timing, I became so thankful to have been given the privilege of fulfilling this long time dream of writing, learning so much about an important and sorely neglected topic and making a real difference for so many people.

If any of this resonates with you, I hope you’ll stick around. I don’t have all the answers—but I believe we can learn from each other, and build something beautiful along the way.
